Most remote controls operate by transmitting infrared light. The infrared is not visible to human eye, digital cameras, however can catch an IR light beam. Take your remote and pointing toward your digital camera (cell phone camera work too) start pressing buttons on the remote. If remote is working, you should be able to see a light on the display.
